Taseko Mines Ltd. exploring name change

The operator of Canada’s second largest open-pit copper mine and the largest private sector employer in the Cariboo could be getting a name change.

Shareholders will consider approving the renaming of Taseko Mines Limited to Trekor Metals Limited at an upcoming annual general meeting in Vancouver on Wednesday, June 24.

The proposed name change, according to the Vancouver headquartered company that operates the Gibraltar Mine northeast of Williams Lake, is to reflect the company’s growing business and expanded asset base in North America.

“Over the last two decades, Taseko has been on a journey – steadily growing our business and unlocking value in our high-quality portfolio of development assets. We’ve seized opportunities that others have overlooked and built value for shareholders and the communities where we operate,” stated president and CEO Stuart MacDonald.

“Our journey will continue as Trekor, a name that embodies our values and reflects our ambition to continue to grow North America’s copper sector.”

Since restarting the Gibraltar Mine, vice president of corporate affairs Sean Magee noted Taseko Mines has invested more than $850 million to modernize and expand its operation and identify mineral reserves to 2044.

Earlier this year the B.C. government added the company’s proposed open pit copper mine approximately 150 km northeast of Kamloops to its list of priority projects to grow the province’s economy through the Look West strategy.

The Yellowhead Copper Project would produce 90,000 tonnes of ore per day over a 25-year mine life, employing hundreds of people. It has an estimated $2 billion development cost and according to a March 2026 company update published online will likely be the company’s next development project.

Taseko Mines Limited also announced the production of copper cathodes from its in-situ leach operation, Florence Copper, in Arizona, U.S.
