A pair of Maple Ridge hockey players will have a chance to wear play for Team Canada in their age groups.
On Friday, Aug. 31, Hockey Canada named 40 players to take part in selection camps for its national U18 team selection camp, and another 40 for its national development team selection camp. Maple Ridge will be represented in both camps.
Adrienne Schneider, who played with Ridge Meadows Minor Hockey, as well as the Burnaby Winter Club and Delta Hockey Academy, will be part of the U18 team camp.
The 16-year-old forward was dynamic with the Delta U18 Prep team last season, scoring 24 goals and 52 points in 30 regular season games, and adding another five points in three playoff games.
She also played with Team B.C. last season, scoring twice in five games. She is one of just four B.C. girls named to the camp.
Jaylyn Morris, who plays for UBC, was named to the development team selection camp. The defender is also a product of the Delta Hockey Academy, and played for Team BC at the U18 level. She is 20, and in her third year of eligibility with the Thunderbirds.
Last season, in 35 games with UBC, she had 13 goals and a career best 27 points. Through her 102 UBC games Morris has 66 points.
Each camp will run from Aug. 3 to 8 at the Richmond Olympic Oval. The camps will feature on and off-ice training sessions and practices, as well as three scrimmages from Aug. 5-8. The final rosters will be selected Aug. 9 for three-game series against the United States, Aug. 12-15 at the Oval.
Canada’s National Women’s Under-18 Team will go for gold at the 2027 IIHF U18 Women’s World Championship, Jan. 8-16 in Ostrava, Czechia.
“We have a talented group of young athletes, including first-time invitees and some returnees, who we are incredibly excited to begin working with at selection camp,” said Nadine Muzerall head coach of the U-18 team. “The competition will be fierce as we look towards our goal of capturing gold at U18 Women’s Worlds in January. We are excited to begin shaping the team that will represent Canada on the international stage this season.”
