B.C. police watchdog investigating after man shot by police in Surrey

The province’s police watchdog is investigating after a man was shot by police in Surrey Monday.

Shortly after 7:30 p.m. Monday (May 25), SPS officers attended a residence in the 12200-block of Southpark Crescent — in Surrey’s Boundary Park neighbourhood — for a report of a suspicious man.

Police arrived on scene and the man “reportedly confronted police, with police firing their service-issued duty pistols,” an SPS release said.

SPS officers and BC Emergency Health Services paramedics administered emergency medical interventions, and the wounded man was transported to hospital, where they were last reported as receiving treatment for “injuries of unknown severity.”

SPS said the Independent Investigations Office of B.C. was notified, and asserted jurisdiction.

IIO confirmed the officer-involved shooting with their own release, which noted that police attempted to detain the man.

“There was then an interaction, and shots were fired by police,” the IIO release said. “The man sustained injuries and was taken by ambulance to the hospital for assessment and treatment.”

IIO media and communications liaison Simon Druker said Tuesday morning the man was in serious condition Monday evening; he said he had no further updates as of 9:45 a.m. Tuesday (May 26).

The IIO asks that any witnesses who have information regarding this matter to please contact the IIO at our Witness Line toll-free at 1-855-446-8477 or via the contact form on the iiobc.ca website.
