Maple Ridge Burrards host WLA home opener tonight

The Maple Ridge Burrards host their Western Lacrosse Association home opener on Sunday night, May 24, at Cam Neely Arena.

The game starts at 7:30 p.m., when they host the Langley Thunder.

The Burrards are led by the reigning WLA most valuable player Marcus Klarich, who topped the Burrards in scoring with 37 goals and 72 points in 17 games. That was good for third place in the entire WLA.

Klarich is one of the Vancouver Warriors personnel with the club, and the others from that NLL squad include forward Payton Cormier, hard nosed defender Jackson Suboch as an alternate captain, and head coach Rob Williams who is an assistant coach in Vancouver.

Cormier is coming off a good playoff performance with the Burrards last season, when he had 13 points in four games.

According to the WLA weekly podcast, with the Burrards having made the playoffs in each of the last two seasons, but bowing out after one round, there will be anticipation to see the young squad take another step this year.

Key newcomers to the team include defencer Nathan Miller, their fourth overall pick, and territorial picks forward Cody Malawsyky and goaltender Jack Kask. All three came from the Minto-Cup winning Coquitlam Adanacs Junior A squad.

Last season the Burrards finished with seven wins, nine losses, and two ties.
