A man is dead in a police shooting in North Vancouver Tuesday and B.C.’s police watchdog, the Independent Investigations Office of B.C., is now investigating.
North Vancouver RCMP responded to reports of a man with an edged weapon allegedly threatening people in a business at Westview Plaza in the 2600-block of Westview Drive around 1:12 p.m. on July 21.
He then exited the business and allegedly entered a vehicle in the parking lot and collided with multiple parked vehicles, B.C. RCMP said in a news released Tuesday.
Police say the suspect then exited that vehicle at a gas station in the same plaza when “multiple police resources” began responding.
He then allegedly got in the driver’s seat of an unoccupied police vehicle.
Police say during the “interaction,” a conducted energy weapon was used and “shots were fired by police.”
The suspect was then taken to hospital where he later died, police said. No officers were injured.
The police watchdog is now looking for additional witnesses and any video footage to help in its investigation.
The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. is called in if there has been a death or injury that meets the threshold of serious harm and if there is a connection between the serious harm or death and officer action or inaction.
