By the time riders in the annual Fraser Valley Terry Fox Ride of Hope reached Langley, they were well past their $50,000 fundraising target.
As of Saturday afternoon, as police were escorting the riders along 255 St. near 12 Ave. the cyclists had raised close to $89,000 and donations were still coming in.
It began and ended at Vedder Park in Chilliwack (UFV Chilliwack Campus), winding through the Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley.
More than $10,000 of that was raised by Terry’s younger brother Darrell Fox of Chilliwack, who launched the event in 2015 to mark the 35th anniversary of the Marathon of Hope.
Last year, Darrell and a team of seven other riders did a cross-Canada ride where they pedalled 7,000 kilometres in 32 non-stop days in the National Ride of Hope.
This year, the ‘Terry Tough’ team planned to ride 360 kilometres in one day to “push their limits physically and mentally to further Terry’s dream of eradicating cancer through research,” an online event summary said.
There are 16 Ride of Hope events across Canada.
Over the past decade, the Terry Fox Ride of Hope has brought in $2,250,000 for cancer research.
