No one was injured after a train struck a crashed car at a rail crossing in Deroche on Sunday (July 12).
According to a news release from Mission RCMP, a witness called 911 at approximately 4 p.m. to report the initial crash at the Lougheed Highway and North Deroche Road crossing.
“The car reportedly took the corner too fast, and collided with a train signal pole,” RCMP said.
Two 18-year-olds — the driver and passenger — were uninjured and exited the vehicle. A freight train then came though the crossing and struck the car just over a minute into the 911 call.
The train stopped, fully blocking the crossing until the wreckage was removed and the train was deemed safe to continue operating.
The collision also closed Lougheed Highway in Deroche for several hours on Sunday evening.
Mission RCMP reminded the public to immediately exit and move away from any vehicle that becomes stuck at a rail crossing.
