West Kelowna RCMP is investigating after a man presumably drowned during an outing on the lake.
At around 11:53 a.m. on Saturday, July 11, the 45-year-old man was thrown into Okanagan Lake and did not resurface.
Following this, a search was conducted for the man on Okanagan Lake with the Central Okanagan Search and Rescue (COSAR) deploying its marine and air resources to help find him.
During the evening of July 11, the search was suspended as authorities could not establish a reliable search area as there were uncertainties as to the exact location of the incident.
As of Monday, July 13, the West Kelowna RCMP are presuming the incident was fatal.
“The investigation has determined that a 45-year-old man was being towed behind a boat on an inflatable tube when he was thrown into the water,” the West Kelowna RCMP said.
“The man was not wearing a personal flotation device and began to struggle in the water.”
The RCMP said the operator of the boat giving the tow had immediately jumped in the water to try and rescue the man. “Despite their efforts, they were unable to reach the man and subsequently required rescue themselves by a nearby boater.”
An Underwater Recovery Team with the West Kelowna RCMP has since been deployed to assist with recovery efforts.
“This is a tragic reminder of how quickly recreational activities on the water can turn into an emergency,” said Cpl. Devon Gerrits, media relations officer for the West Kelowna RCMP. “We extend our sincere condolences to the man’s family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time. We also want to remind everyone enjoying our lakes this summer to always wear a properly fitted personal flotation device. It is one of the simplest and most effective ways to prevent drowning.”
