Surrey Police have one person in custody after a man was wounded in an overnight shooting in Newton on June 28.
Surrey Police Service officers were called to a home in the 14500-block of 75 Avenue at about 12:34 a.m. Sunday, June 28, a police press release notes. They found an injured man who had been hit by gunfire while in his car outside the home.
“Officers applied emergency medical aid until BCEHS paramedics arrived. The victim was transported to hospital with reportedly serious, but non-life-threatening, injuries,” an SPS release says.
Officers with the SPS Project Assurance team – which was set up to help combat extortion-related crimes – were in the area at the time and stopped a suspect vehicle. A man was arrested “without incident,” police say, and he remains in custody as the investigation continues.
Police say the shooting is believed to be targeted but is not believed to be extortion-related.
Any witnesses, or anyone with information, CCTV, or dashcam footage of the incident or suspicious activity in the area before or after the incident is asked to contact Surrey Police Service’s non-emergency line at 604-599-0502 and quote file number 26-66185 (SP).
