Ridge Meadows Recycling Society is offering free, public summer tours of the recycling centre with an award-winning environmental educator.
Participants will get the chance to see how recyclable materials are sorted and processed, get a photo taken in an actual recycling truck, and watch our baler compress recycling into bales ready for shipment.
Tours are 45 minutes long and are perfect for community members, families and children curious about the ways of recycling.
Guide, Dan Mikolay, was recently awarded the Recycling Council of British Columbia’s 2026 Education & Engagement Award for “Excellence and Leadership in Environmental Stewardship and Circular Economy Principles.”
Dan began working with Ridge Meadows Recycling Society in 2008, and since that time has given almost 6,000 school and community workshops to more than 130,000 youth and residents.
Students and teachers in the community know him by many names including: “Dan the Recycling Man,” “Dan the Worm Man,” and “Dan the Bear Man”. This is due to his workshops on recycling, composting, and wildlife.
In addition to his environmental workshops, Dan is also the WildSafeBC coordinator for Maple Ridge.
He has presented more than 1,000 school workshops on worms and composting alone.
There are five tours available starting on Saturday, July 11.
Two will be held on July 11, one on Wednesday, July 15, and two on Sunday, July 19.
