A 32-year-old man has been charged with first-degree murder in relation to a Surrey roadside shooting that took place on Jan. 13.
Over the past months, the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) has been investigating the trail of evidence following the shooting of 46-year-old Baljinder “Binder” Singh Garcha.
The shots fired incident took place on Jan. 13 at approximately 11:50 a.m., when Surrey Police Service (SPS) officers responded to reports of a man lying near the street in the 3500-block of 176 Street.
Upon arrival, the police located Garcha, who was suffering from gunshot wounds. Surrey Fire Services (SFS) and BC Emergency Health Services (BCEHS) attended, and Garcha was pronounced dead at the scene.
There was also a vehicle fire earlier that day near the 18900-block of 40 Avenue, which investigators believed was linked to the homicide.
IHIT says that investigators have now identified 32-year-old Brian Kiraly-Miller of the Lower Mainland area as a suspect.
On May 28, Kiraly-Miller was located and arrested without incident in Kamloops, an IHIT press release says. He was charged with one count of first-degree murder.
“First-degree murder is the most serious offence, and the laying of this charge reflects our ongoing commitment to these complex homicide investigations,” said Sgt. Freda Fong of IHIT.
Fong says that this case holds a huge impact on Garcha’s family, friends and the broader community. “While details about the motive and circumstances cannot be shared due to the ongoing court proceedings, investigators can confirm this was a targeted shooting,” said Fong.
Kiraly-Miller is set to appear in court on June 5.
