Ferrabee wildfire near Hell’s Gate remains out of control at 36 hectares

A wildfire near Hell’s Gate remains out of control, according to BC Wildfire Service.

The latest update on Sunday (April 26) at approximately 5 p.m. noted “minimal growth” overnight for the 36-hectare blaze between Hope and Lytton.

“Much of this fire is burning in steep terrain which is inoperable for ground crews – crews are continuing to work on creating access,” the update reads.

BC Wildfire Service says the Ferrabee fire is between a “Rank 1” blaze — a smoldering ground fire with no open flame —and “Rank 2”, meaning a low vigour surface fire with open flame.

The response from the Coastal Fire Centre includes four helicopters, two unit crews, one initial attack crew , three officers and a unit tender.

The blaze is visible from the highway and nearby communities, and BC Wildfire Service said periodic lane closures on Highway 1 are possible due to crews and equipment working.

“There is a risk of falling debris and drivers are asked to use caution when passing through the area,” the update reads.

The wildfire is believed to be human-caused.
