Athletes from Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows won numerous medals at the BC Summer Games, which were held from July 22-26 in Kelowna.
Local swimmers had a lot of success in the pool, and Noah Cano took gold in the 100 m boys butterfly, and also won gold in the 50 m freestyle relay, and silver with the medley relay.
Callum Knowles won bronze in the boys 800m freestyle.
In artistic swimming, Yaxian Zhang and Evelyn Zhang each won a silver.
In track and field, thrower Joe Broeders took gold in the boys shot put, and also won bronze in the discus.
Ridge sent numerous canoe and kayak paddlers, and Audrey Watkins and Felix Nicholson both won silver medals – Watkins in the 100m sprint, and Nicholson in the 2000m kayak race.
A pair of wrestlers also medalled, as Gurleen Banniwal took silver in the 40 kg girls class, and Teaken Christianson-Barker won bronze in the 42 kg class. Former Maple Ridge Rambler standout Ashton Senko helped to coach the team.
There were also athletes from the Ridge Meadows sports associations who gook gold in mixed field lacrosse, girls softball, and other events.
The games assemble the province’s emerging high performance athletes, coaches and officials every two years
