A byelection is set for August for the federal North Vancouver-Capilano riding.
Prime Minister Mark Carney announced Sunday (July 26) three byelections for Aug. 31: North Vancouver-Capilano in B.C., Beaches—East York in Ontario and Chicoutimi—Le Fjord in Quebec.
The North Vancouver-Capilano has been pending since former Liberal MP Jonathan Wilkinson announced April 30 that he accepted Carney’s invitation to serve as Canada’s Ambassador to the European Union.
During his time as MP, he’s held ministerial roles with Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard, Environment and Climate Change and Energy and Natural Resources.
Wilkinson was first elected in 2015 when he left the private sector. He was re-elected three more times.
He received 59.8 per cent of the votes in the April 28, 2025 general election.
Candidates for the Liberals, Conservatives and Green Party have stepped forward so far.
The Liberals announced Braeden Caley as the party’s candidate. Born and raised in B.C., he most recently served as deputy chief of staff to Carney.
For the Conservatives, North Vancouver resident Stephen Curran has announced his intention to run. He ran in the 2025 election, receiving 33.7 per cent of the votes.
The Green Party of Canada announced Shelley Luce as the party’s candidate. A North Vancouver resident, Luce holds degrees from McGill University, the University of New Brunswick and holds a Doctorate in Environmental Sciences and Engineering from UCLA.
In the two other byelections, the Beaches—East York riding was held by longtime Liberal MP Nate Erskine-Smith and the Chicoutimi—Le Fjord riding was held by Conservative MP Richard Martel.
Erskine-Smith was first elected in 2015 and re-elected three more times. He delivered his farewell speech in the House on June 17.
Martel was first elected in 2018 during a byelection. He was re-elected in 2018, 2021 and 2025. He was recently appointed to the Senate by Carney.
Carney’s Liberal government now holds a slim majority with 172 seats. Since the 2025 general election, five MPs – four Conservative and one NDP – have crossed the floor to join the Liberals.
Acadie-Annapolis MP Chris d’Entremont was the first to cross the floor to Carney’s Liberals on Nov. 4, 2025, followed by Edmonton Riverbend MP Matt Jeneroux two days later and Markham–Unionville MP Michael Ma announcing his move Dec. 11, 2025. All three were elected in 2025 as Conservatives.
Nunavut MP Lori Idlout, who was elected under the NDP banner in 2025, announced March 10 she was crossing the floor to the Liberals and Conservative Sarnia—Lambton—Bkejwanong MP Marilyn Gladu announced her switch nearly a month later on April 8.
