Maple Ridge RCMP had to rescue a boater while out on Alouette Lake, where they were performing safety checks.
On July 18 and 19, officers were conducting impairment checks on boaters and drivers, and ensuring people had the proper safety equipment, when they came upon a boater who had run out of gas.
They were able to tow the boat back to the dock.
“Don’t get stranded folks! Have a plan and keep extra supplies on hand before you head out,” the RCMP reminded people online.
Dozens of people were sent back to shore for not having life jackets, nor personal floatation devices on board their vessels.
“Officers were particularly surprised by the number of paddleboarders who were not equipped with either of these while out on the water and at a distance from shore,” said the RCMP online.
“This was especially concerning given the recent tragedies that have occurred on our waterways across our region.”
Police are reminding everyone to always wear a life jacket on the water, regardless of their swimming ability.
They noted there are many unexpected factors which could impact a person’s ability to keep their head above water, like falling and hitting your head or colliding with another watercraft.
Boaters should make sure their vessel is in good working order before they leave the shore, always be prepared and tell someone about when they are planning to return. They should have the proper safety equipment on board for everyone, watch their speed, and never boat under the influence as the same laws apply as for driving.
The RCMP also want people to know they will be out on the water and along the roadways all summer to educate and enforce public safety.
