One person is dead after a single-vehicle crash on Highway 1 in Abbotsford early Monday morning (July 20).
According to a news release from the Abbotsford Police Department, officers responded to a collision into the centre median near Cole Road just before 2 a.m.
Two people were inside the vehicle and received medical attention. The passenger was pronounced dead on the scene and the driver was airlifted to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries, per the news release.
“Preliminary evidence indicates the vehicle was travelling westbound on Highway 1 when it lost control, rolled, and came to rest in the centre median. Investigators believe impairment may have been a contributing factor in the collision,” police said.
An investigation led by the department’s patrol section, with assistance from the APD’s traffic enforcement unit and the Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service (ICARS), is in its early stages.
The collision closed Highway 1 in both directions but one eastbound lane in now open. Police say westbound traffic remains closed between No. 3 Road and Whatcom Road. As of 7:08 a.m., crews were working to reopen one lane within an hour.
