Quickly growing grass fire extinguished off Highway 97 in West Kelowna

A grass fire that sparked off Highway 97 and Sneena Road, Saturday evening, was quickly doused.

According to West Kelowna Fire Chief Jason Brolund, crews responded to the area at about 5:30 p.m. as flames were quickly spreading right off the highway.

The fire was located near Bridge Hill and grew to about 300 feet by 75 feet, said Brolund.

“Crews were able to quickly knock down the fire despite heavy winds in the area, and it is now considered out,” he said.

The cause of the blaze is under investigation, as it sparked just off Highway 97.

Those living along Westside Road, took to social media to report the growing smoke prior to crews containing the blaze, with many preparing to leave in case of an evacuation.
