WORLD CUP DAILY, June 23: Messi scores record 18th; England can advance with win today

Daily FIFA World Cup match updates and news for Black Press Media publications.

Monday was a big day at the World Cup where Lionel Messi became the tournament’s record goalscorer with 18 all-time, and Kylian Mbappe moved joint-second with two of his own as Argentina, France and Norway advanced to the playoff Round of 32.

Argentina’s Messi scored both goals in a 2-0 win over Austria in Dallas, while Mbappe netted two of his own in a 3-0 romp over Iraq in Group I action in Philadelphia, soaked by a thunder storm that delayed the match.

Incredibly, Messi has all five of Argentina’s goals in the tournament so far, two games in.

In New York, Erling Haaland (for Norway) and Ismaila Sarr (Senegal) made it four braces across Monday’s four matches, as Norway edged Senegal 3-2.

The day’s fourth game involved Jordan and Algeria in San Francisco.

Tuesday features another four matches starting with Portugal vs. Uzebekistan in Houston (10 a.m. start), followed by England vs. Ghana in Boston (1 p.m.), Panama vs. Croatia in Toronto (4 p.m.) and Colombia vs. Congo in Guadalajara (7 p.m.), all show live on TSN.

Games this week lead to the World Cup knockout phase (Round of 32), which runs Sunday, June 28 to Friday, July 3. With the tournament’s expansion to 48 teams, 32 teams advance from the group stage (the top two from each of the 12 groups, along with the eight best third-place finishers).
