Police are urging anyone with information about the Inez mural vandalized on Red Dress Day to come forward with it.
“Chilliwack RCMP is investigating an incident of vandalism involving one of the city’s most beloved murals, located on Victoria Avenue in downtown Chilliwack,” said Cpl. Carmen Kiener, media relations officer, in a release May 7.
The paint damage happened in broad daylight on May 6 at about 10 a.m. and investigators are actively working the case, with no arrests to date.
“Anyone with information related to this incident is urged to contact the Chilliwack RCMP,” Kiener said.
“Even the smallest detail may assist investigators.”
The artist Kevin Ledo is returning to Chilliwack next week to complete the restoration after someone dumped dark paint on it, but police are still seeking evidence, suspects and intel.
“The fact that this occurred on the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls is deeply concerning and upsetting,” the RCMP officer said.
“The mural holds significant cultural, historical, and spiritual meaning for members of the local Indigenous community,” Kiener added.
Acts of vandalism against culturally significant artwork like this are taken “very seriously, as they impact not only property but also community well-being, identity, and respect.”
“We recognize the deep concern and hurt this incident has caused and remain committed to supporting the community and holding those responsible accountable.”
Officers are exploring all “avenues of evidence” to determine who was responsible, Kiener said, and should CCTV footage or stills emerge from the investigation, they will be shared with the public she said.
