White Rock hospital to undergo 12th maternity diversion since December

A White Rock hospital is set to shutter its maternity unit for the 12th time since December.

Peace Arch Hospital will undergo another maternity diversion, this time, from 8 a.m. Wednesday, April 29 to 8 a.m. Monday, May 4.

Maternity diversions have been happening at both Peace Arch and Ridge Meadows hospitals since December of last year, due to a temporary shortage of obstetrician-gynecologists, which means expecting parents who had planned to give birth at these hospitals may be guided to another maternity site to deliver their babies.

While Fraser Health maintains they are working on what they call ‘temporary’ diversions, but said hundreds of patients have been “guided” to other sites from both Peace Arch and Ridge Meadows hospitals since December.

Others say the ‘temporary’ diversions constitute a health care crisis, including top physicians who work in obstetrics and gynecology and Surrey-White Rock MLA Trevor Halford.

Maternity diversions at Peace Arch Hospital since Dec. 7, 2025 include:

• Dec. 7 to 10, 2025

• Dec. 22 to 25, 2025

• Dec. 29, 2025, to Jan. 1, 2026
