In honour of Earth Day, Cinema Politica Ridge Meadows is partnering with Maple Ridge Climate Hub in the screening of “Emergence: Women in the Storm.”
This B.C. documentary features stories of resilience and community in describing how women are navigating climate-based emergencies, including the Lytton fire and Fraser River Valley floods.
“Climate change is already affecting our communities. Coming together to learn, reflect, and take action has never been more important,” said hub president Hudson Campbell.
In 2026, the film was the Official Selection of the: Qathet International Film Festival; World Community Film Festival; Victoria Film Festival; Toronto International Women Film Festival; and the Salt Spring Film Festival.
It is directed by Nova Ami and Velcrow Ripper.
Following the film there will be a panel discussion including: Edd Bennett, Manager of Emergency Preparedness for Maple Ridge, and Kirk Grayson, founding member of Maple Ridge Climate Hub.
“By bringing community members together in conversation, we can better understand the challenges we face and the role we each play in building resilience,” noted Grayson.
Maple Ridge Climate Hub is a not-for-profit society and registered charity founded in 2019, and is part of a Canada-wide movement to help municipalities shift to a low-carbon economy through communication, education, and action.
Informational resources about emergency preparedness in both Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows will be available.
Cinema Politica organizer Oosha Ramsoondar welcomed the Climate Hub as a partner in presenting the timely documentary.
“Our experience has shown that partnering has enabled enhanced knowledge, communication, cooperation, and involvement of the community around important issues,” she added.
