LETTER: Pitt Meadows should be on hook for new pool costs, too

Dear Editor,

Why is Maple Ridge footing the bill for a new pool that will surely be a shared amenity?

Ie. 90 per cent of the Pitt kids living south of Lougheed Highway will be able to ride their bikes to the Hammond pool quicker than almost all kids from Maple Ridge.

It is obvious to anyone who has tried to go swimming at the Haney leisure centre during the past few years that we are maxed out in terms of space.

I agree that we need a new facility.

But how does Pitt Meadows get off the hook financially?

This is a city that cannot figure out how to build a railway overpass or underpass, despite past councillor/alderman Ken Joyner and citizen George Meeker providing a solution to council (ie. go look at Poco!) back in the 1980s.

The plan for the new pool is to locate it smack dab beside Pitt Meadows, whose citizens will naturally flock there to swim, etc., because their community does not have an indoor pool, so who can blame them.

But it is unreasonable for the council and mayor of Pitt Meadows to piggy back on Maple Ridge to provide services for their own taxpaying citizens.
