The Guichon Creek wildfire in Logan Lake remains out of control at 88 hectares in size, according to the latest update from BC Wildfire Service (BCWS).
In its Thursday morning (July 30) update, BCWS said its crews helped personnel from the Logan Lake Fire Department battle the blaze overnight and into the morning.
Throughout the early hours of the day, ground crews remained on site with heavy equipment building guards and worked on containing the blaze. Meanwhile, BCWS’ night vision imaging helicopters actioned the fire.
As of this morning, the blaze is displaying Rank 2 and 3 fire behaviour “meaning a surface fire with some open flame, occasional candling, and a slow to moderate rate of spread.”
On Thursday morning, the evacuation alert issued by the Thompson-Nicola Regional District on Wednesday evening remains in place. In total, seven properties in the Electoral Area “J” (Copper Desert Country) are on evacuation alert, meaning the residents must be ready at a moment’s notice to leave to the alert is changed to an order. The seven properties are:
- 6525 Tunkwa Lake Road;
- 7185 Tunkwa Lake Road;
- 7753 Tunkwa Lake Road;
- 7760 Tunkwa Lake Road;
- 7835 Tunkwa Lake Road;
- 7850 Tunkwa Lake Road;
- 7923 Tunkwa Lake Road; and
- Any other areas as outlined on the attached map.
The suspected-cause of the blaze remains human-caused, said BCWS.
On July 29, the fire was initially discovered around 2 p.m. As it grew, Highway 97C in the area was closed down in both directions. However, just after 9 p.m., DriveBC stated the highway had reopened and it remains open on Thursday morning.
