The B.C. Lions lost more than a game Friday night.
Starting quarterback Nathan Rourke suffered a (non-throwing) shoulder injury on the first drive of the game and didn’t return, as the visiting Lions dropped a 19-17 decision to the Edmonton Elks in CFL action at Commonwealth Stadium.
Cody Fajardo threw for 282 yards and a touchdown for the Elks (5-1). Receiver T.J. Luther had the lone Edmonton TD, while Vincent Blanchard booted four field goals and a convert. Chase Brice replaced Rourke (the league’s reigning most outstanding player) and went 20-for-34 for 226 yards for the Lions (1-4) but also threw four interceptions. Keon Hatcher had B.C.’s receiving touchdown, with Zander Horvath running for a major and Sean White kicking a field goal and two extra points.

Edmonton opened the scoring just over nine minutes into the contest, when Blanchard connected on a 38-yard field goal.
The Lions responded with a touchdown drive keyed by a terrific contested catch at the Edmonton one-yard line by Hatcher off a deep ball from Brice.
Horvath powered in for a TD (his third rushing major of the year) from a yard out with 2:57 left in the quarter and Whyte’s convert made it 7-3 B.C.
Blanchard missed a 52-yard field goal seconds into second quarter. The Elks took the lead several minutes later, following a Tyrell Ford interception of Brice. Edmonton drove down to the B.C. five, and on second down, Fajardo scrambled and found Luther for a touchdown. Blanchard’s convert gave the Elks a 10-7 lead.
With five minutes to play in the half, Blanchard booted a 26-yard field goal to up the lead to 13-7 and, following a third Brice interception, he added his third of the game (again from 26 yards) as time expired to make it 16-7 Elks at halftime.
B.C. running back James Butler had just five yards on five carries in the half. Brice finished 7-for-13 for 93 yards and the three picks. Fajardo was 18-for-21 for 201 yards and a TD at the break.

Five minutes into the third quarter, Brice tossed his fourth interception, with Edmonton’s Kenneth Logan Jr. snaring the pick at his own 43-yard line and returning it to the B.C. 55.
The Lions continued their stout defensive effort, however, forcing an immediate two-and-out.
With 1:10 left in the quarter, and helped out by a questionable roughing the passer penalty that kept their drive alive, the Elks added a 16-yard Blanchard field goal to go up 19-7 and they held the 12-point margin heading into the final quarter.
The Lions pieced together a solid drive to open the final quarter, culminating in Brice finding Hatcher for an 11-yard touchdown at 1:52. Whyte’s convert pulled B.C. within 19-14.

After Brice was almost picked off for a fifth time, B.C. settled for a 19-yard Whyte field goal to make it 19-17.
With three minutes to play, the Lions had a chance to take the lead with another field goal, but their drive stalled near midfield.
They got the ball back again on their own 22 with 96 seconds to play but the Edmonton defence held firm to wrap up the win.
