Maple Ridge Burrards get a win, Klarich back in WLA scoring lead

Marcus Klarich moved back into the Western Lacrosse Association scoring lead, and the Maple Ridge Burrards got back to winning, with a 12-7 win over the Burnaby Lakers on July 3.

Last year’s WLA MVP Klarich and Burrards team captain Tyler Pace both had seven points in the game, and Klarich is on top of the league with 63 points, just one ahead of Zach Manns of the Victoria Shamrocks. Klarich was the game’s first star with two goals and five assists, while Pace scored three goals and four helpers.

The Burrards needed a comeback to get the win, as the Lakers jumped out to an early 4-1 lead. Midway through the second period Ridge took over, and scored the last six goals unanswered to secure the victory.

Veteran Riley Loewen scored three and added a helper, while newly acquired forward Jon Phillips and Dagan Carlson each had a goal and two assists.

It was the eighth win of the season for Burrards rookie goaltender Jack Kask, who ranks second in the league in that category, one behind Shamrocks star Chris Origlieri. Kask is among the league leaders in all goaltending categories.

With the win, the second-place Burrards improve their record to eight wins and four losses on the season.

They have an upcoming busy stretch of three games in six nights, starting at Queen’s Park Arena when they take on the New Westminister Salmonbellies on Thursday, July 9. Then they sail to Nanaimo to take on the Timbermen on Saturday; and on Tuesday, July 14 they will take on the ‘Bellies at home in a 7:30 p.m. start at Cam Neely Arena.
