Spirit Square packed with people celebrating Canada Day in Pitt Meadows

Live music, stilt walking, Scout’s kub kar racing, classic cards, inflatable activities and food, had hundreds packed in to Spirit Square in Pitt Meadows on Wednesday to celebrate Canada Day.

Pitt Meadows residents Sid Subramanian and his daughter Taarimi Raiiyer, 3, were taking part in a necklace craft hosted by the Pitt Meadows Museum.

Subramanian said they were thoroughly enjoying the event.

“A lot of activities for the kids,” he said.

Alex Leite was checking out the classic cars with his son Owen, 3. The Port Coquitlam residents were at the event with their friends who live in Pitt Meadows.

“It’s a great opportunity to spend more time with the family,” Alex said of the celebration.

The Dubin family were also enjoying the event.

“It’s terrific. We come every year. It’s wonderful for the kids,” said mom Erin.

“It’s very important to be a part of the community, and be proud to be Canadian, and teach them that it’s good to be in this country and they have the freedom to do all this kinds of stuff,” she said.

Jessica Stapleton who was at the event with her two daughters said that community was her favourite part.

Stapleton noted that it is important to her to celebrate Canada Day because they love the country.

“It’s a safe place to raise kids. I wouldn’t want to raise my kids anywhere else,” she said.

Steve Halfnights and Wes Reamsbottom of the band Almost Famous performed at the event. Both are teachers in the Maple Ridge Pitt Meadows School District.

Halfnights explained how the pair love performing and have fun giving back to the community.

“It’s Canada Day. We love our country and we love celebrating it,” he said, noting their playlist was all Canadian.
