Police say the deaths of two people whose bodies were discovered in a remote area near Nakusp are not currently being treated as criminal in nature.
The Nakusp RCMP is working with the BC Coroners Service following the discovery of two bodies along the Tate Creek Forest Service Road.
Police said they received a report at about 9:17 a.m. on June 16 of a burned vehicle and a body in the vicinity.
Investigators determined the vehicle had become stuck in difficult terrain and appeared to have subsequently caught fire.
A deceased man was found nearby.
Police said he appeared to have suffered burn injuries before dying.
The body of a woman was also located in the area.
No obvious injuries were observed at the time she was found, according to police.
RCMP said the investigation remains in its early stages and no conclusions have been reached.
However, police say evidence gathered at the scene indicates criminality is not considered a factor in either death at this time.
“The area is remote, with no cellular service and extremely limited traffic,” Cpl. Paul Britton of the Nakusp RCMP said in a statement.
“While the two deceased have been tentatively identified, we continue to work closely with the BC Coroners Service to confirm their identities and to advance the investigation.”
Police said the BC Coroners Service has conduct of the investigation.
