PHOTOS: Herculean strength shown at Fraser Valley strongman regionals

Dozens of muscular B.C. residents gathered to not only break a sweat but also records at the Fraser Valley’s Strongest regional competition in Abbotsford on Saturday (June 6).

Among the various feats of strength that competitors endured was the pulling of a 27,000-lb truck, which organizer Frank Lalonde said both the men and women did in an incredible display of athleticism.

Also part of the competition was the trap bar deadlift event, which had cash prizes on the line for whoever could surpass the previous records set at last year’s regionals.

Carlos Monsalve and Tiana Ewing both rose to this challenge, claiming their titles as the deadlift recordholders.

Monsalve was a member of the U90 kg men’s division and deadlifted 1,070 lbs, while Ewing successfully lifted 570 lbs in the U64 kg women’s division, both of which approached world records.

These events took place in the parking lot of Sevenoaks Shopping Centre, which Lalonde said added a bit of an additional challenge for the competitors.

“The regionals went smoothly despite having every weather system show up, and we’re looking forward to more records and everyone coming out to watch next year,” said Lalonde.

With the regionals wrapped up, Fraser Valley’s Strongest is now preparing to host the B.C. provincials on Aug. 15.

This competition will also take place in the Sevenoaks Shopping Centre parking lot and will include squats, stone to shoulder, overhead press medley, monster deadlift, and shield carry events.
