The man who was stabbed to death in Maple Ridge last weekend has been identified as Lord Kevin Ayson Olaer.
Police were called to the Port Haney Wharf on Saturday evening, May 30, for a report of a fight in progress. They arrived to find a 28-year-old who had been stabbed. Despite life-saving efforts by first responders and paramedics, he died at the scene.
His mother, Marizel Ayson, was often emotional as she spoke about her son. Olaer emigrated from the Philippines in 2019, and lived in Port Coquitlam and Maple Ridge. Kevin, as he was called, was not married, and worked at an Esso service station.
“He was a very smart man,” she said, noting her son had aced his psychology post-secondary courses in his home country.
He did not continue studying in Canada. She noted he had suffered from depression in recent years.
He was her oldest child, leaving behind a brother and sister, and the family has gathered after his untimely death.
“This is a hard time for the whole family,” said his stepfather Gerald Marshall.
There is an online fundraiser to pay for his funeral expenses.
His mother wrote online: “As my family stands together in this darkest hour, we find ourselves enveloped in vulnerability, grappling with the profound weight of loss that touches every aspect of our lives, both financially and emotionally.”
The fundraiser is online at gofundme.com.
