Injuries after boat strikes train bridge in Maple Ridge

Boaters were injured when their vessel crashed into a concrete bridge support near Kanaka Creek Regional Park in Maple Ridge on Tuesday night, May 3.

Just after 8 p.m. on Tuesday evening, Maple Ridge fire and rescue crews responded to the call near Lougheed Highway and River Road for reports of a boat accident.

A metal-hulled boat was travelling in Kanaka Creek, just upstream from the Fraser River, when it collided head-on with the concrete support of CPKC Rail bridge. A significant emergency response was initiated, with three ambulances at the scene.

The accident occurred close to a boat launch, where first responders could reach the injured parties. Onlookers said at least two victims were transported by ambulance. The boat showed significant damage.

RCMP were on scene investigating.
