A capsized boat in the waters of Prospect Lake sparked a late night search for a missing person.
Both Saanich Police and BC Emergency Health Services attended the scene shortly after midnight Thursday (May 28).
According to police, five people were in the boat – exceeding the vessel’s capacity – causing it to overturn.
When officers arrived, one person remained unaccounted for.
“A search was conducted and, shortly after 1:30 a.m., the missing individual was located along Stevens Road, not far from Prospect Lake,” said a police statement.
While not injured, four individuals were transported to hospital to be assessed after ingesting water and being exposed to the cold.
“Paramedics provided emergency medical treatment to four patients on scene who were then transported to hospital in stable condition,” said a statement from Brian Twaites, paramedic public information officer.
In addition to the boat being over capacity, police said they believe alcohol contributed to the incident.
Police said the incident remains under investigation.
“If you are venturing onto the water, ensure you do not exceed your vessel’s capacity, carry all required safety equipment, and avoid consuming drugs or alcohol,” they said.
