A man charged in connection with a 2024 crash that killed one man and inured another at a Surrey bus stop will next appear in court June 12.
Michael Gordon Bovencamp was charged with impaired driving causing death, impaired driving causing bodily harm, dangerous driving causing death, and dangerous driving causing bodily harm after the Oct. 5, 2024 crash near 144 Street and Hyland Drive.
A Ford F350 was travelling northbound on 144 Street around 4:30 p.m. when it crossed into oncoming traffic; the truck then collided with a bus stop bench, injuring two pedestrians and causing damage to the surrounding property.
One 33-year-old man was declared dead at the scene, while a second man in his 30s received minor injuries and was transported to a local hospital, police said at the time.
Bovencamp remained at the scene and was arrested by RCMP traffic officers.
In a GoFundMe set up by the victim’s widow, Nardeep Kaur, the 33-year-old is named as Saraj Singh, whom his wife said was “sitting at a bus stop as he was on his way home when the unthinkable happened.”
Left with their 11-year-old son, Kaur set up the GoFundMe fundraiser to help take Singh’s body back to India, and to pay for the funeral attangements.
“We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for any support you can offer,” the GoFundMe said.
TV media reported the truck used in the crash is owned by Jewel Welding Fabrication and Coatings Ltd. of Maple Ridge.
Peace Arch News has reached out to the welding company.
Bovencamp is next due in Surrey Provincial Court on June 12 at 2 p.m. for disposition.
