A Cree/European artist has won the Fraser River Indigenous Society’s logo contest for National Indigenous Peoples Day.
Artist Rachel Drager’s logo reflects the theme of the day, “Keeper of the Seasons – Honouring the Summer Solstice”, and will be featured on T-shirts that will be sold through the society for the annual event.
In an online post the society noted that Drager’s learning and inspiration comes from the land and the natural living sources around her.
“Her art created for the Fraser River Indigenous Society reflects the thoughtfulness and understanding she has developed through learning about the organization and the lands connected to it,” said the society, noting that Drager lives on the traditional lands of the Tsleil-Waututh, Kwikwetlem, Musqueam, and Squamish Peoples and her family has lived on the Coast Salish territories for four generations and across Canada for as long as family history is known.
“These relationships, along with the research and connections she receives while living here, help shape and inspire her work.”
The Indigenous society is also looking for volunteers for the National Indigenous Peoples Day being held on Saturday, June 20, in Memorial Peace Park.
“We are seeking enthusiastic volunteers to help us bring this special day to life and be a part of the celebration,” said the society online, adding that any support makes a difference, whether that be a couple of hours or the whole day.
