LETTER: We need to wake up to economic realities

Dear Editor,

We’re living in very confusion times and it’s hard to understand what’s going on in our world.

I had the opportunity to chat with one of our cities councillors, Jenny Tan, at the recent Earth Day celebrations.

I tried to stress the importance of reining in our spending at city hall because of the worsting world economic situation.

I told her that there is a lag affect of the coming hard times ahead, and that we’re all going to be much worst off financially in the years ahead.

This is the same message I tried to convey in person to mayor and council more than a year ago.

Are they listening?

As Prime Minister [Mark] Carney tried to explain in Davos at the World Economic Forum, this is not just a transition, but a rupture that we’re dealing with in our world today. And, we can expect that there will be tough financial times ahead for us all of us.

So my point to our mayor and council is; cut spending and be more prudent in how you raise our taxes to afford these expenditures.

Now, is not the time to be spending on things that can or should be delayed to a future date.

As parents, we have to try and explain to our children that they cannot have everything they want all the time. Sometimes, they just have to wait and be patient.

So what’s with our government’s inability to do the same?

Why do they think that they can just tax the crap out of all of us?

When will they wake up to this reality.

Maybe this coming fall election will bring them back down to earth, and the realities that we the taxpayers have to live with.
