Two dead after remote RV fire near Trail

Two people are dead following a recreational vehicle fire on the outskirts of Trail in the Pend d’Oreille Valley, according to Trail and Greater District RCMP.

Police say officers were called Tuesday, May 12, to assist Kootenay Boundary Fire Rescue after reports of a fully engulfed RV parked in a remote area near Seven Mile Dam.

When emergency crews arrived, it was unknown whether anyone was inside the RV.

Firefighters extinguished the blaze and prevented it from spreading into the surrounding forested area, RCMP said.

During an examination of the scene, responders located two deceased individuals in the fire debris.

Trail RCMP secured the area and launched an investigation into the identities of the deceased and the circumstances surrounding the fire.

Police have since determined the fire is not suspicious and investigators have found no evidence of foul play.

The investigation has now been turned over to the BC Coroners Service, with support from the Trail detachment.

“This is a deeply tragic incident, and our thoughts are with the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives,” RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Brett Urano said in a statement.

“We also want to acknowledge the efforts of the fire crews who prevented further damage in what could have become a larger wildfire situation.”
