Time served for South Okanagan prolific offender’s standoff firearm charge

A South Okanagan prolific offender pleaded guilty to once again being in possession of a firearm while under a lifetime ban, after a 2025 police standoff outside a Penticton motel.

Samuel-Luc Prescott-Pereault appeared via video from the Okanagan Correctional Centre on May 12 to plead guilty to possession of a firearm contrary to a court order, for which he received a sentence of time served in custody.

Prescott-Perreault was facing five charges, including two counts of possessing a firearm without a license or registration, one count of possessing a prohibited or restricted firearm, one count of careless storage of a firearm, and one count of possessing a firearm contrary to a court order, all stemming from the incident on Feb. 14, 2025.

On that day, Prescott-Perrault, wanted on an unrelated and outstanding warrant, was seen by the RCMP on Martin Street in Penticton with a backpack before getting into a vehicle. Officers followed the vehicle to a motel on Lakeshore, and Prescott-Perrault entered one of the units.

Officers maintained surveillance of the unit until they were able to bring the Emergency Response Team in. A standoff ensued, closing off a section of Lakeshore Drive for several hours, until Prescott-Perrault and two other individuals surrendered to police.

When Prescott-Perrault was arrested, he was not carrying the backpack he’d been seen with earlier that day. The police obtained a search warrant for the hotel room, and during that search, found a magnum revolver wrapped with a towel and hidden.

Prescott-Perreault has an extensive history in the South Okanagan involving the courts, dating back to 2016, when he was sentenced for breaking and entering, possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose, possession of stolen property under $5,000, and three breaches of recognizance.

Those charges related to an incident in 2015, where he was found inside the locked tire compound of the Penticton Canadian Tire, and attempted to flee police by trying to climb onto the roof before surrendering.

In 2024, he received a four-year sentence, reduced to one year after time already served was taken into consideration, for leading police on a chase from Penticton to Oliver and back again, involving different vehicles before being arrested, with a backpack containing methamphetamines, fentanyl and a handgun nearby.

More recently, the court was told that he received a 120-day sentence on March 19, 2026, for a firearm-related offence, and a four-month sentence in 2022. The latter incident also involved police searching a Penticton motel room, during which they found two firearms, with one of them loaded.

Following the May 12 joint submission by the Crown and defence, the judge agreed to levy a sentence of 341 days for the 2025 firearm charge, which, after taking into consideration his remaining credit for time already spent in custody, will see Prescott-Pereault begin his two-year probation the same day.

In addition to the standard terms of a probation, such as keeping the peace and being on good behaviour, Prescott-Perreault was ordered to provide a DNA sample, and received a second lifetime firearms and weapons prohibition.
