It was an action-packed day of rugby in South Surrey Saturday, where the 2026 BC Rugby senior club finals were held an epic event that saw seven champions crowned.
More than 2,500 guests attended the all-day games at South Surrey Athletic Park Saturday (May 9), which saw 14 men’s and women’s rugby teams from 10 different clubs across B.C. compete for championship provincial titles.
UBC Old Boy Ravens were crowned champions of the Men’s Premier League and lifted the historic Rounsefell Cup for the third successive season, a BC Rugby release noted, while Vancouver Thunderbirds made it a five-peat of Women’s Premier League titles.
Kelowna Crows RFC celebrated a historic double, with victory in the Women’s Division 2 and Men’s Division 2 championship matches, while Burnaby Lake RFC enjoyed the ultimate redemption in the Men’s Division 3 final to banish the ghosts of last year’s final defeat.
Vancouver Rowing Club lifted the Men’s Division One title, while Capilano RFC were crowned Women’s Division One Champions.
The atmosphere was electric at the South Surrey fields, home to Bayside Sharks RFC, as teams battled it out in sunny, warm conditions, with a festive atmosphere punctuated by food trucks, fans and plenty of dynamic rugby action.
The No. 1-ranked UBCOB Ravens made it a hat trick of Rounsefell Cup wins as they defeated surprise package No. 6-ranked UVIC Vikes in the Men’s Premier League final with a 30-3 victory, the release continued, while the Women’s Premiere League final saw Vancouver Thunderbirds secure a fifth-straight Gordon Harris Memorial Trophy Championship win with a 38-17 triumph over Westshore RFC.
In the Men’s Division 1 final, Vancouver Rowing Club emerged victorious 29-20 over nearby rivals Capilano RFC in a highly-anticipated clash; in the Women’s Division 1 final, Capilano RFC produced a mammoth performance for a 44-7 win over Kamloops Raiders RFC.
The Men’s Division 2 final saw the Kelowna Crows RFC beat defending champions Kamloops Raiders RFC with a 21-15 win, while the Women’s Division 2 final featured the Kelowna Crows RFC win a 28-12 victory against Chilliwack Crusaders RFC to lift the Ged Griffiths Cup.
In the Men’s Division 3 final, top-seeded Burnaby Lake RFC lifted the Men’s Division 3 Championship after a crushing 43-10 win over the Vancouver Rowing Club.
