Dear Editor,
I got back into cycling after moving to Maple Ridge in 2021.
I’ve greatly enjoyed the numerous cycling trails, multi-use pathways (MUPs), and bike lanes that I can access from my home to either get around town or simply enjoy some exercise.
Recently, in looking up the new cycling laws that I’ve heard about in B.C., I noticed that the B.C. government has provided a few signs municipalities can install to help keep cyclists safe.
Given that we’ve had several cyclists die after being hit by motorists in this area, I think these signs are greatly needed. Why haven’t I seen any around Maple Ridge?
I’d also like to point out that while there are numerous bike lanes and MUPs around Maple Ridge, these path seem rather helter skelter.
Often, I can ride in a bike lane for a block, then must join traffic for a block, then I can follow a MUP for a few blocks, then I’m back in traffic, and then I get another bike lane.
Bike lanes often have gravel and other debris in them from the passing cars, making them not exactly safe to ride (and should be cleaned by the street sweeper more often).
In cycling in Richmond last weekend, I noticed how busy the bike routes were, how well-signed one lovely route across Richmond was, and how many coffee shops cater to cyclists.
Fort Langley is also a popular destination with cyclists, as it offers numerous cafes just off some great cycling paths.
Maple Ridge could be a similar cycling destination… if it wasn’t so hard to cycle into town to get a coffee here. Currently, most cyclists go around Maple Ridge on the dikes instead of stopping to buy coffee and treats and other goodies.
Please, make Maple Ridge more cycling friendly by:
• installing signage about keeping a safe distance from cyclists
• installing bike racks so cyclists can lock up their bikes
• improving bike routes around Maple Ridge
Thank you.
