Vancouver Giants fined after scout makes ‘inappropriate remarks’ to female reporter

The Vancouver Giants have been hit with a $5,000 fine after the team’s head scout called a female reporter “good looking” during a broadcast of the WHL Prospects Draft.

League commissioner Dan Near announced the fine Saturday morning (May 9), calling the remarks “regardless of intent, not reflective of the organization’s standards of respect and inclusion.”

The comment was made by Terry Bonner after the club took Eli Vickers with the third overall pick on May 6.

Bonner was put on air for the WHL draft show, where he was interviewed by a female reporter.

“Well, thank you very much, you’re a very good-looking girl,” Bonner said before giving his thoughts on the Giants’ selection.

The WHL on Saturday called his remarks “inappropriate” before handing down the fine.

“Accountability is a cornerstone value of our league — that includes both players and staff,” Near added.

Bonner has been in the Giants’ front office since the 2001-2002 season and serves as the longest-serving scout in franchise history.

He took over as head scout ahead of the 2021-2022 campaign.
