Behchoko, NWT remains on lockdown after alleged shooting, 1 suspect at large

Behchoko RCMP have arrested multiple individuals but at least one suspect remains outstanding following reports of shots being fired earlier in the day, police stated shortly after 4 p.m. on Friday.

The community remains under lockdown.

“Officers have contained several residences in the community in relation to the investigation,” the Mounties stated.

Members of the Emergency Response Team, Police Dog Services, Territorial Crime Reduction Unit, Remote Piloted Aircraft System Unit and additional general duty officers are on scene.

A check stop has been set up on the access road to Behchoko. Motorists are advised to expect delays when travelling to the community. Non-essential travel should be postponed, the RCMP urged.

Hours earlier on May 1, the RCMP stated that officers were searching for up to six individuals believed to be armed with long guns travelling on two snowmobiles.

There was also a description of the incident as a “targeted attack,” but no mention of victims.

Police are requesting anyone with CCTV or other footage in the area of Godliwa Tili that may have captured the incident or the suspects to contact the Behchoko RCMP at 867-392-1111.
