Families of Tumbler Ridge victims suing OpenAI in California

The families of seven victims of the Tumbler Ridge mass shooting are suing OpenAI in California for negligence.

The complaints were filed in federal court in San Francisco on Wednesday, April 29.

In one, it is alleged that the shooter’s activity was flagged in June by the company’s automated system for “gun violence activity and planning.” This was routed to a specialized response team that urged OpenAI to notify the RCMP. The company did not.

According to police, eight months later, on Feb 10, 18-year-old Jesse Van Rootselaar shot and killed two family members in her Tumbler Ridge home before heading to the local secondary school, where she killed six more people. She died of a self-inflicted wound.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman sent a written apology to the community on April 23, saying he is “deeply sorry” for the failure.

More to come.
