New traffic changes coming from Langley SkyTrain construction

Langley and the Langley-Surrey area will see some new traffic changes coming soon as a result of the ongoing SkyTrain construction.

With the new SkyTrain line being built along Fraser Highway and Industrial Avenue, drivers are dealing with fewer lanes, blocked turns, and diversions.

Three upcoming changes in and near Langley are:

• At Fraser Highway and 188 Street, there will be no access north of Fraser Highway between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., on April 28 and 29.

• At 196 Street/Willowbrook Drive and Fraser Highway, there will be single-lane traffic only northwest of Fraser Highway. The reductions will last 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and are expected to run from May 12 to 25.

• At 200 Street and Industrial Avenue, the right lane northbound on 200 Street will be closed 24/7 from mid-May for up to one month.

Those upcoming changes are in addition to lane reductions, intermittent driveway closures, and left turn restrictions along parts of Fraser Highway.

Industrial Avenue remains open to eastbound traffic only from 200 Street to 203 Street, and the former laneway from Highway 10 eastbound, just north of Fraser Highway, is closed.

Most of the closures are to deal with the installation of the guideway itself, which is supported by hundreds of reinforced concrete columns.

Piledriving and column construction is taking place up and down the 16 km line extension that runs from the King George SkyTrain station to the new end of the line, at 203 Street and Industrial Avenue in Langley City.

Langley will have two of the eight stations planned for the line extension. The project is expected to open in late 2029, but the bulk of the guideway is expected to be completed in 2027, when the last of the pre-cast guideway segments will be created.

After that, contractors will be finishing the eight stations and laying the rails and electronics for the SkyTrain itself. Testing of SkyTrain cars is expected to start in 2029.
