Maple Ridge City Hall loses deputy CAO to cancer

One of the City of Maple Ridge’s top administrators has died.

Mayor Dan Ruimy gave a tearful tribute to deputy chief administrative officer Stephane Labonne at Tuesday night’s (April 14) council meeting, after Labonne passed away from pancreatic cancer.

“Stephane was not just a colleague, he was someone who made an impact on this organization, and on the people within it. He brought professionalism, dedication, and a genuine sense of care to his work every single day,” said Ruimy.

“He had a true passion for public service. His entire career was dedicated to serving communities, and that sense of purpose was evidenced in everything he did. He understood that public service is ultimately about people. About showing up. About doing the work. And about making a difference in the everyday lives of those we serve. For Stephane this was never just a job, it was about contributing to something bigger than himself, and leaving each community stronger than he found it.”

Labonne came to Maple Ridge as the general manager of parks recreation and culture in early 2022, and was soon promoted. He had worked for the City of Edmonton and other Alberta municipalities, and in Prince George, in a career in municipal administration that began in 1996.

Ruimy said he valued Labonne as a newly elected mayor.

“Having somebody like Stephane who brought a wealth of knowledge and experience, always very respectful to me, to council, to everyone around; always there with advice; always there being his authentic self – which sometimes could be a bull in a china shop, but that’s who he was.”

He described Labonne’s quiet strength as he took time off work, but was determined to get back to city hall.

“He looked great. He looked healthy, and he was here two or three times a week, doing what he did best. And it went on like there was nothing wrong,” said Ruimy. “But here we are today.”

“He was loyal, passionate and authentic in how he showed up in the world.”

The mayor offered condolences to family and friends. Labonne leaves behind wife Sabrina and children.

“Stephane, thank you for your leadership, your service, and the legacy you leave behind,” said Ruimy. “You will be deeply missed.”
