Garibaldi throws open doors for Arts Night in Maple Ridge

Garibaldi Secondary is gearing up to welcome the public to their fourth annual Arts Night event.

Around 100 students will be participating in the evening that will feature a visual arts exhibition, delicious food prepared by the culinary arts students, and live student performances.

“This is the one night of the year that the visual arts students can exhibit their art,” said visual arts teacher Maureen Chand.

“The students are very excited to exhibit their artwork in a gallery-style and in a professional setting. It gives them a ‘feel’ as to what it is like to exhibit art in a gallery-like setting and witness visitors taking the time to observe their art,” added Chand.

Between 150-200 people have attended the arts night in the past.

Arts Night begins at 6 p.m. in the school’s cafeteria where students in the culinary arts program will be showcasing an array of delicious finger foods and the visual arts will be on display.

Culinary arts teacher Brent McGimpsey noted students in the culinary program will be focused on creativity and making the best of their recipes.

Students of all ages are welcome to perform at “The Coffee House” which will start at 7:30 p.m. in Garibaldi Secondary School’s grand theatre.

“Coffee House is a vibrant open mic night that is put on by our students,” said French and social studies teacher Beth Macdougall, who helps run the event. “In its fourth official year, student performers grace the stage with a variety of acts, including singing, stand-up comedy and poetry reading.”

The Coffee House will also feature a concession stand with homemade goods and student-made stickers.

Admission to the GSS Art Night is by cash donation at the main school entrance.

All funds raised will support the school’s arts programs.
