65 hectare wildfire considered held near Pemberton, off Sea-to Sky Highway

A wildfire that sparked east of Pemberton off the Sea-to-Sky Highway is now considered held.

A blaze that is considered held, is projected, based on fuel and weather conditions and resource availability, to remain within the current perimeter, control line or boundary, according to BC Wildfire.

BC Wildfire remains on scene along with Líl̓wat Nation. Nation Volunteer and Pemberton fire crews, while supporting Líl̓wat Nation Public Works.

According to area resident Tat’ush Peters electricity in the Mount Currie 1 area had been off since 3:25 a.m. Tuesday, after trees fell onto hydro lines, reportedly damaging the poles, near North Arm Farms.

Peters stated that the power returned at about 4:40 p.m., but that at that time, residents in the area heard a possible explosion sound, saying only that minutes later, a fire sparked behind homes near Rancherre Street, which spread to a nearby field.

BC Hydro is reporting a current outage, affecting five customers, as of 4:59 p.m. in the area of a treatment plant due to a fire. A crew is on scene, with no estimated time of restoration.

The blaze was originally estimated to be 100 hectares in size; however, BC Wildfire later reported it was mapped at 65 hectares.

Rancheree Street remains closed.

A 100-hectare wildfire is burning east of Pemberton near the Sea-to-Sky Highway.

The blaze was discovered on April 7 and is believed to be human-caused.

BC Wildfire is on scene of the incident that was discovered sometime before 5 p.m. The fire is currently burning out-of-control.

The location of the blaze is in the Rancheree Street area of Mount Currie, which is within the Líl̓wat Nation.

The Líl̓wat Nation is asking residents to avoid Rancheree as access is restricted to emergency vehicles only at this time.
