The union representing WestJet’s cabin crew staff issued a 72-hour strike notice on July 30, just ahead of the B.C. Day long weekend.
Negotiations continued July 31, however, if an agreement is not reached job action could start as soon as Sunday, Aug. 2, impacting travel plans on the holiday Monday.
The cabin crew staff are demanding fair wages, a stop to unpaid work, and improved working conditions.
In a release from WestJet on July 31, the company stated planes are being parked in anticipation of the strike as negotiations have not yet been successful.
The release reads, “This necessary step allows the airline to maintain operational control and protect the integrity of the broader network. Most importantly, this proactive measure minimizes the risk of stranding guests and aircraft. We remain active at the bargaining table to achieve a mutually agreeable deal at the earliest possible time.”
As a result of the strike notice, WestJet is providing a one-time change or cancellation with no additional fees for travellers with flights booked between July 30 and Aug. 4.
