A toddler was rushed to hospital by air ambulance after falling into the water at Whonnock Lake.
Maple Ridge RCMP responded to a call for medical emergency assistance at around 8 p.m. on Monday, July 27, in the 27800 block of 113 Avenue at the popular local recreation site.
There they found a two-year-old in medical distress and immediately assisted with what they called “life-saving measures.”
They were later relieved by paramedics with Emergency Health Services.
The child was transported to hospital by air ambulance where they still remain.
BC EHS said they responded to the incident with an ambulance with primary care paramedics, an advanced care paramedic response unit, a paramedic specialist, a paramedic supervisor and an air ambulance with critical care paramedics.
Paramedics provided emergency medical treatment to one patient who was transported by ground and air ambulance to hospital in critical condition.
Maple Ridge RCMP say they secured the area and took statements from witnesses and individuals.
“The investigation is still in its early stages,” said police. “Our thoughts are with the child and their family at this time.”

According to the City of Maple Ridge, Whonnock Lake is one of the city’s most popular summer destinations and frequently reaches capacity on hot days.
The city asks visitors to swim only in designated areas, follow all posted safety signs, and supervise children around bodies of water.
There are no lifeguards at the beach, although there is a roped off swimming area.
Maple Ridge RCMP said they will continue to have a presence on the local waterways this summer and are reminding residents about water and boating safety in light of a number of tragic incidents on the water across the region.
