A cycling group will be taking to Highway 7 in Maple Ridge to put up memorials and renew the call for safety improvements.
Vision Zero Vancouver noted that this stretch of Lougheed Highway through the community is a very wide road, running through residential neighbourhoods.
“The road is built for speed,” the group said online, noting that they had a speed radar gun along a section of the highway, and, they said, not a single driver was going the speed limit which is 60km/h.
“Pedestrians keep getting hit and killed on one short stretch of Lougheed Highway,” they said.
The ride will be taking place on Saturday, July 25.
Cyclists will be meeting in Vancouver Community College and Clarke Avenue in Vancouver at 10 a.m., or at 11 a.m. at Braid Station.
Then they will be cycling to Maple Ridge along routes that include nice trails and multi-use paths, as well as in mixed traffic, including some larger and busier roads.
The group said it will be a “chill-paced, no-drop social ride” that will culminate in the placing of memorial posters and flowers at fatality locations along Lougheed Highway.
The round-trip distance for the Vancouver riders will be about 55 kilometres.
According to the group, car crashes kill 100 people every year in Metro Vancouver.
“Let’s make it zero,” they said online.
