During a commute in Maple Ridge, a quick-thinking cyclist pulled out his phone and caught a doe and two fawns crossing a busy road – using the crosswalk.
The three deer crossed Abernethy Way along 216 Street, Thursday morning, July 23 – although, the light was red.
Traffic waited patiently as the animals crossed.
Dave Danchuk, who took the video, was amused.
“I do see deer on occasion, but never crossing in an intersection, and never with mama and the two fawns,” said the cyclist, who regularly commutes from North Port Coquitlam to Haney Appliance and Sound at 224 Street and Dewdney Trunk Road.
“’Always take the scenic route when you can’ as my mother always said,” said Danchuk.
“It was a cool moment. Makes the amazing bike ride commute along Hyde Creek, Deboville Slough, Pitt River and Alouette River all that much cooler.”
Danchuk said he saw the three deer cross the intersection and make their way towards The Patch Brewery, before turning back and crossing the intersection again to the north side.
As Danchuk bikes often, he said he often has his phone at the ready, mostly for bear crossings.
However, he has stumbled upon two turtles wandering along some Maple Ridge roads, one of those this morning as well.
“In Maple Ridge, even the deer use the crosswalks. Cool to get to spend some time watching these three deer this morning along my bike ride commute,” posted Danchuk with the video online.
