Police confirmed remains found in Mission in 2024 are those of a woman reported missing on June 14, 2026.
According to a previous news release from Mission RCMP, Mary Gadbois was reported missing by a family member on June 14 after not hearing from her for “a number of years”. She was last known to be living in Mission in 2021.
Police said in an update on Wednesday (July 15) that the woman was estranged from her family, so it was not unexpected that there was a prolonged period of no contact.
“Investigators worked diligently to try to locate the missing woman, and eventually began looking into whether human remains found in Mission in 2024 may be those of the missing woman,” RCMP said.
After examination alongside BC Coroner’s Service, Mission RCMP confirmed the previously unidentified remains were those of the missing woman.
According to a statement from Mission RCMP, the remains were found by a passerby in a forested area on the west side of Mission in September 2024. At the time, police carried out an extensive search but no additional evidence was located.
RCMP said a cause of death was not determined.
“Mission RCMP send their sincerest sympathies to the woman’s family, and hope that this news helps to bring some closure to what must have been a very difficult time in their lives,” the detachment said.
